Steam Silencers
ENEVA steam silencers are specially engineered equipment designed to control the high noise levels generated during the release of high-pressure steam to the atmosphere, without adversely affecting equipment safety or process conditions. They play a critical role in terms of both occupational safety and environmental noise criteria during sudden steam discharges in safety valves, blowdown lines, and turbine bypass applications.
- Effective reduction of high noise levels
- Design suitable for high-temperature and high-flow steam discharge
- Minimum back pressure on equipment
- Compatible operation with process and safety equipment
WHAT IS A STEAM SILENCER?
Steam silencers are equipment used to reduce aerodynamic and acoustic noise generated during the sudden expansion of pressurized steam to atmospheric pressure.
ENEVA steam silencers feature a hybrid design that combines reactive and absorptive silencing principles:
- Steam is first expanded in the diffuser section, increasing its frequency
- It is then passed through sound-absorbing (absorptive) sections to reduce noise levels
- Both high and low-frequency noises are effectively attenuated
- The design ensures that allowable back pressure limits are not exceeded
- Silencer dimensions are determined based on the target noise level and steam flow rate
- Safety valve discharges
- Blowdown lines
- Pressure reduction and control valve discharges
- Start-up and purge lines
- Turbine bypass and heating lines

Let’s Control the Noise
By analyzing the noise levels generated during steam discharge in your facility, let’s determine the most suitable steam silencer solution together with ENEVA engineering.
Let’s Evaluate Your Project- Acoustic calculations based on steam flow rate, pressure, and temperature
- Noise analysis based on international standards (VDI, etc.)
- Design compliant with allowable back pressure limits specified by valve and equipment manufacturers
- Expansion joint integration for thermal expansion (axial / lateral / universal)
- Design in accordance with EN or ASME standards as a pressure vessel when required
Each silencer is calculated and manufactured on a project basis.
- Inlet expansion joint (for thermal expansion)
- Rain hood
- Bird screen / protection
- Support legs
- Drain nozzle
- Lifting lugs
- Noise reduction: Up to 70 dB(A) depending on capacity
- Operating temperature: Steam up to 500 °C
- Inlet sizes: DN25 – DN800
- Single unit steam capacity: Up to 200 t/h
- Low and optimized back pressure
- Carbon steel or stainless steel body options
